After teaching a seminar in Singapore, we opened the floor for sparring, so that people could try to put into practice what we had been working on over the weekend. Even though it was far too hot for my liking (anything over 25 degrees makes me want to sleep!), I donned my jacket and did some sparring with people.
My goal for each bout of sparring was to demonstrate the skills and techniques I had been teaching over the course of the weekend. After all, if I am the instructor, I should be able to practise what I preach! We had been working on common fencing for one day and Liechtenauer for the second day.
I managed to showcase the Flugelhaw, provocations, the use of good body mechanics, and the mindset of “going hunting”. Overall, I was struggling to perform as well as I would like, but nonetheless, I still managed to give a decent representation of some of the things we had covered in the seminar.
