The concept of “style” in HEMA is often something that is ignored in favour of working on technique, or finding the most optimal way of doing something. Often historical disciplines are merged together to create a modern hybrid system, without due thought about the stylistic elements of the original disciplines. I would like to suggest a definition for the term “style” and would like to explore why “style” is a very important part of the study of HEMA – and why ignoring it is perilous!
